Volunteering at Blacktown Animal Rehoming Centre is a lot of fun and highly rewarding. By helping rescued animals you’ll be giving them a better chance of finding their forever home.

What do I need to volunteer at Blacktown Animal Rehoming Centre?

To be a volunteer at Blacktown Animal Rehoming Centre you’ll need to be at least 18 years old and have either experience and/or the confidence to work with domestic animals in a shelter environment.

You’ll also need to:

  • have the ability to observe, understand and act on dog and/or cat body language without delay

  • cope within a highly emotional environment.

Up-to-date vaccination status for COVID-19 is mandatory for all Blacktown City Council volunteers.

How much time do I need to commit?

You’ll need to commit to at least one shift per fortnight (weekday or weekend) for a minimum of six months. 

Monday to Friday

Morning shift: 10 am - 12.30 pm

Afternoon shift: 1 pm - 3.30pm

Saturday to Sunday

9 am - 12.45 pm

How can I help dogs?

Exercising: walking dogs and taking them for a run and play in our off-leash areas.

Socialising: dog play groups and exposure to other environments.

Grooming: brushing, washing and clipping.

Training: providing reward-based training including basic obedience, leash training and teaching fun tricks.

How can I help cats?

Socialising: giving cats lots of TLC (tender loving care) and playing with them to increase their chance of adoption.  

Grooming: Keep our cats looking their best by maintaining their beautiful coat.

How can I help in other ways?

Photography: taking photos of our animals to advertise for adoption.

Events: helping with on- and off-site events, handling animals and assisting staff with liaising with the public.
